Magic Lake Lantern Festival

A New Year’s Eve celebration for the whole family at beautiful Magic Lake, Pender Island. This annual tradition brings all ages together in a celebration of light, spectacle and the warmth of community in the midst of a dark pacific northwest winter.

The Magic Lake Lantern Festival is a participatory community event featuring a family lantern procession to be followed by a multimedia spectacle on this last day of the year. We bid farewell to the year before and celebrate the birth of a new year with togetherness and a bright future.

Preparations begin earlier in the year with planning sessions to develop the year’s theme and organize management of volunteers and resources. Construction and repairs to lanterns, puppets and props take place throughout the year, along with lantern making workshops and many performance rehearsals.

The main stage for the annual event will takes place outside on Magic Lake parkland. The site itself is decorated with assistance of local artists and artisans. Performances take place on both land and water featuring festival favourites such as stilt walkers and giant puppets. In addition we have more unique offerings such as a kayak ballet and a shadow dance.

The festival often showcases both local artists and professionals travelling from off island. It is always a multigenerational event and allows the youth of the island to work side by side with professionals to create a high caliber performance piece.

The festival itself is always free of charge and if open to both on and off island viewers. For more details on this years event or workshops prior please take a look at our recent updates in the menu above, contact us or follow up on facebook!
